It is really a blessing to grow up and be educated in Hong Kong. One can easily access eastern and western cultures, and the atmosphere does encourage one to take freely and abundantly from both. Joseph involved himself in Church activities while young, and those memories remain vivid in his mind. In his trips to Europe, he still makes every effort to visit the old monasteries and the village chapels. Yet at the same time he is deeply absorbed in Chinese thought, literature and art.

Again in Hong Kong, one has the opportunity to learn appreciating both worlds of art. While Joseph enjoys the serenity and profundity of Chinese art, he has also the chance of encountering Western art, from Bonnard to Matisse, from Nolde to Münter.

Although Joseph does involve himself in various art forms like printmaking and stone carving, his main medium is oil painting. A well-known writer wrote of him: “Although he paints in a western medium, his paintings are Chinese in spirit.” He makes use of the painting medium to express his thoughts and ideas. The richness of Nature is, most of the time, his beloved theme; so is the relation of Man with Nature.
